McAfee Security, a division of Network Associates, has announced the newest version of its flagship anti-virus software product, McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 7.0.
With new on-demand and scheduled in-memory process scanning for viruses, worms and Trojans, VirusScan Enterprise 7.0 can now act as a `worm killer` to find and remove threats that use memory to spread, such as CodeRed and Slammer.
This major release of VirusScan Enterprise also delivers enhanced performance and upgrades including:
. Small size - 10MB software package requires significantly less bandwidth to deploy and helps reduce deployment costs for enterprise customers worldwide.
. Complete protection - Desktop and fileserver anti-virus protection are combined into a single solution.
. Improved control - Risk-based scanning allows administrators to prioritise their processes, allowing control of their own policy, to maintain productivity on the network.
. Enhanced updating - AutoUpdate functionality provides comprehensive and flexible updating, and ensures better protection for mobile and remote employees.
. Multiple language support - Support for 13 international languages including English, German, French, Spanish and simplified Chinese.
This newest version of VirusScan Enterprise includes a patented risk-based scanning feature that allows IT administrators to prioritise their applications or processes into higher and lower risk categories. Lower risk operations, such as backup software implementations, are allowed to function without having to undergo rigorous virus-scanning process, which allows critical high-risk applications, such as e-mail, browsers and office applications to be scanned more stringently.
This enables customers to conserve process power and maintain productivity on the network. And, running VirusScan Enterprise on an Intel processor-based PC can further reduce the time end-users spend running their anti-virus scans. An Intel Pentium 4 processor with Hyper-Threading Technology enables virus scanning to operate simultaneously with high-risk applications, such as e-mail and office programs, which can increase user productivity.
"Today`s Internet security threats, like the recent Slammer worm, continue to be a concern for many IT organisations. The combination of anti-virus and security software, like McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 7.0, and high-performance PC platforms based on Pentium 4 processors, help provide the security solutions necessary for today`s computing environments," says Steven Asbjornsen, manager, Business Demand Creation, Intel Desktop Platforms Group.
"As malicious threats continue to advance, it is important that security software and operating systems are updated frequently to ensure comprehensive protection."
Also included in the newest release of VirusScan Enterprise is improved AutoUpdate functionality, allowing for easy and rapid updating of the latest virus definitions, engines and service packs completely and automatically from both master and remote servers. VirusScan has been optimised to include adjustable updating, which provides remote users with the flexibility to schedule an update to their systems at a later point in time so that they don`t have to worry about slow or unreliable network connections. Because remote users have the flexibility to schedule updates or perform them on command, bandwidth usage can be significantly reduced when working from the road.
VirusScan Enterprise 7.0 also offers a resumeable updating feature, allowing AutoUpdate to resume an update if a connection is somehow disrupted. Because a DAT (file name extension) update can pick up where it left off, remotely connected users with potentially unreliable or low-speed Internet connections are ensured better protection, even if the update is interrupted.
"Yesterday`s anti-virus tools are no match for today`s evolving threats," says Christopher Bray, Network Associates regional director of sub-Saharan Africa. "We are committed to providing customers with innovative solutions needed to proactively defend their networks from today`s Internet threats, which often spread across multiple geographies in a matter of minutes.
"McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 7.0 is a true success of our beta testing programme and was built based on the feedback and support from our beta customers. When combined with McAfee Desktop Firewall and ePolicy Orchestrator, VirusScan Enterprise provides an extremely effective integrated defence against the scourge of today`s blended threats."
Designed for the global enterprise, VirusScan 7.0 includes support for 13 different international languages, as well as Microsoft`s Multilingual User Interface (MUI) technology, for simple international deployments across multiple languages.
