The Department of Communications (DOC) has partnered with the MTN Foundation and the SA Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) Foundation to ensure learners in Vuwani, Limpopo, receive essential educational resources.

Most schools in the Vuwani area were forcefully shut down for months last year, following violent protests that saw public property vandalised and burnt.

In a statement, the DOC says minister Faith Muthambi handed over full bursaries to two learners in Vuwani yesterday.

The bursaries, which were contributed by the SABC Foundation, were given to the learners who achieved top marks in last year's matric examinations.

The minister also visited 17 schools in the area to hand over bicycles to learners, says the department.

According to a DOC statement, the bicycles were donated by the MTN Foundation and will be used by learners who have to travel a long distance to attend school.

The statement says: "Our work in education is directed by the National Development Plan, which envisages the achievement of a high-quality school education with literacy and numeracy at globally competitive standards, to provide learners with the opportunity to reach their full potential.

"In order to achieve this goal, all ministers and deputy ministers were directed by the ANC-led government to assist with whatever means or resources possible to ensure the re-opening of schools in the first-term of 2017 is managed efficiently and effectively."

Since the start of the academic year, Muthambi is one of the ministers who have been on a mission to ensure schools re-open this first term and that learners from low-income families receive essential resources.

Muthambi has visited a number of schools in KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga, according to her department.
