Government sets up ICT centres valued at R5.4 million for six schools in Mpumalanga.

Today, technology centres valued at R5 4 million will be handed over to six Mpumalanga schools.

As part of government's nationwide back to school campaign, communications minister Faith Muthambi will present the centres in Ehlanzeni District Municipality in the Mpumalanga province.

The schools that will receive the centres are Enkhokhokweni Primary, Mbuyane High, Mvangati Primary, Edwaleni Primary, Hlanganani Secondary and Phaftwa High, according to a statement.

The centres have the capacity to accommodate more than 35 learners per session, adds the statement.

Muthambi says the centres will improve learning and teaching at the six schools, as well as help government realise the National Development Plan goal of expanding ICT access to SA citizens.

"As government, we are fully aware that if we can't manage in the ICT sector, then it will manage us and our future generation.

"The centres will help to bridge the digital divide in historically disadvantaged communities. We are not only focusing on bridging the digital divide in our rural schools but we are also committed to building informed learners as well as promoting ICT in rural schools."

She adds: "Our view is that the handing over of these centres will go a long way in helping our schools in the deep rural areas to be part of the global village."

Mpumalanga education MEC Reginah Mhaule is expected to join the minister as they both visit other schools in the province and engage learners, teachers and school governing bodies.
