Roger Muller, who fulfils the role of Facilities and Procurement Manager at the Open Learning Group (OLG), has just completed the Higher Certificate in Logistics Management, offered by OLG.

Muller found this qualification to be occupationally relevant and has gained value from the practical solutions to challenges of everyday duties. "I gained many insights into ways in which we can improve certain aspects of our everyday duties," says Muller. "Purchasing Management was by far my favourite subject because it relates to my daily activities and I found it to be a very interesting subject," says Muller.

OLG has developed a complete education and training development path for the logistics and supply chain management related industries. This means an individual can now study, with OLG, all the way up to a B-Degree on NQF Level 7, in this field of study. With this new development, OLG positions itself as a specialist supplier of education and training programmes for the logistics and supply chain management related industries.

"I enjoyed studying this programme as it touches on topics that I am familiar with in my procurement and facilities projects and that form part of my day-to-day duties in the workplace. I found many insights in which I can propose improvement, such as transport management. My studies have highlighted the necessity for us to plan company fleet related journeys and trips more efficiently. I am approaching these tasks differently in the workplace after gaining the related theoretical knowledge, and it leaves me feeling fulfilled and so proud that we are making a difference already!" says Muller.

Very few institutions offer qualifications in the logistics and supply chain management field - especially through distance learning education, which is becoming an increasingly popular mode of learning. It provides flexibility for the individual who is employed on a full-time basis. The adoption of distance learning support tools, such as the interactive whiteboards and online teaching and learning systems, simplify the journey for the individual and ensures easy access to tutorials, learning material and interaction with fellow students and lecturers.

"I enjoyed the broadcasting sessions, which enabled contact with the different tutors and fellow students. Finding quiet time at night though to finish assignments and to study often urged me to my car, where I could focus and concentrate in peace. I am privileged though to have the support of my family, who are very proud of my achievement. My mom even told the children and grandchildren that 'the man is 50 already and still studying - now that's an example for your own studies!'"
