OLG focuses education, training offerings towards logistics, supply chain management

The Open Learning Group (OLG) has developed a complete education and training development path for the logistics and supply chain management related industries. This means an individual can now study, with OLG, from NQF Level 2 and articulate all the way up to a B-Degree on NQF Level 7, in this field of study. With this new development, OLG positions itself as a specialist supplier of education and training programmes for the logistics and supply chain management related industries.

"By having focused our programme offering, we are in a position to align ourselves more closely with the industry and its representative bodies," says OLG's Academic Head Dr Deon van der Merwe.

"Our proactive approach allows us to stay abreast of new developments within the industry and to offer solutions to changing training needs. Employers who make use of our education and training solutions not only invest in their employees' futures, but also contribute to the level of professionalism for their own and related industries."

A list of industries with skills shortages has been issued through the Department of Labour, and this list includes logistics and supply chain management related industries. "Our aim is to specifically assist with education and training experience for individuals who are either entering the scarce skills sectors or already employed in the relevant sectors. Programmes are conveniently available either via the short learning programme route, or the skills programme route, or the full qualification route, and will therefore speak to the specific individual's needs and the specific employer's workplace skills plan requirements," states Van der Merwe.

Very few institutions offer qualifications in this field - especially through distance learning education, which is becoming an increasingly popular mode of learning as it provides flexibility for the individual who is employed on a full-time basis. The adoption of distance learning support tools such as the interactive whiteboards and online teaching and learning systems simplify the journey for the individual and ensure easy access to tutorials, learning material and interaction with fellow students and lecturers. OLG uses the SMARTBoard and has installed various of these across southern Africa.

"Many individuals entering their sectors of work are in need of the necessary education and training and experience. By continuously developing themselves, individuals will improve their own skills and increase their employability for future career growth," says Van der Merwe. "The positive impact of their growth on industry skills and competence levels will in turn positively affect the industry's level of delivery, while addressing the significant skills crisis experienced in southern Africa."

With this focus in mind, the OLG vision is to develop academic offerings up to a post-graduate level.
