Skills development increases human capital and motivates

By Open Learning Group
Johannesburg, 27 May 2013

Skills development facilitators and human resource executives spend time, energy and money on identifying training solutions suitable to meet the needs inside of their organisations, and emphasis is placed on occupational learning.

The positive impact of suitable development on employees' growth will in turn increase human capital for the organisation, increase industry skills, increase competence and address the skills crisis experienced in South Africa.

The story of Bethuel Motahane is such a success story. He recently obtained his National Certificate in Logistics from the Open Learning Group. This achievement has been the highlight of Motahane's success path, which he started in 2004. He has subsequently enrolled for the Diploma in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, also presented by OLG.

Born in Bothaville, Motahane attended school at Didiphetoho Secondary School and matriculated in 2002. He obtained a Certificate in Information Technology from the PC Training College, in Klerksdorp, in 2003. It was just after he received this qualification that his sister picked up an application form for him to enrol for a learnership with Goldfields Logistics, part of the IMPERIAL Logistics Group. He was accepted and worked under Manager Uli Ferreira, who took Motahane under his wing and guided him on his development path.

It was with Ferreira's guidance that Motahane completed the Certificate in Professional Driving through the Transport SETA, TETA, in 2005, after which he became a permanent employee of Goldfields. In 2011, he discussed his learning path with the human resources department and applied for the National Certificate in Logistics through the Open Learning Group to further his development.

For Motahane, the past year's studies really provided insight and knowledge that he was able to apply in his professional and personal life. "Once you can understand where you fit into the bigger supply chain, you can understand the impact you have on the economy and on the organisation. I now know that my position is not inferior and studying this qualification brought this insight. It is a good feeling to know that I add value! The financial modules especially empowered me to take charge of my own affairs. I can now enquire about interest on purchases and manage debt with my newfound knowledge."

Motahane spends a lot of time on the road due to his profession as driver. He has been awarded several times as driver of the month or driver of the year, and has accumulated over one million kilometres on the road for Goldfields. "I am really grateful to everyone who has given me so many chances at Goldfields Logistics. They have nurtured me, guided me and opened doors for me to develop my talent and I would like to give back the skill that I am acquiring with my studies."

Although there is not much time for entertaining hobbies, he is an avid soccer player and belongs to a soccer club of drivers, who are all in the service of large transport companies. His family plays a very important role in his life, and in his free time he dreams of one day becoming an entrepreneur with his own transport company. He is enrolled for the Diploma in Logistics and Supply Chain Management through OLG and is looking forward to gaining more knowledge, skills and insight with which he can contribute positively towards his working environment.

IMPERIAL Logistics enrolled various employees for this programme, from drivers to managers. Motahane was the second of all the enrolled candidates to have completed the qualification.
