The police are investigating fraud at Mango's call centre, says the low-cost airline.

The company, South African Airway's low-cost offering, says there have been a small number of fraudulent cash transactions conducted through its call centre.

Communications manager Hein Kaiser says the company cannot provide information, such as how many customers were affected, or how much money is involved, as the police are investigating the matter.

Following fraudulent activity across all domestic airline bookings last year, Mango is investigating a small number of new incidences and working closely with the authorities, the company says.

The airline has asked people who made their bookings through the Mango call centre, and paid with a cash deposit, to verify their bookings by phoning the Mango contact centre.

Mango says payments made at Shoprite, Checkers and Checkers Hyper Money Market Counters, and with credit cards and Edgars or Jet account cards are unaffected.

The airliner, which started operations in October 2006, has apologised for the inconvenience.
