| Back in town
Gigglebytes is back! (Did anyone miss us?) As it seems that some readers think ITWeb is slightly on the serious side, Gigglebytes has been ordered to provide a dollop of light-hearted fun each Friday!
But this frivolous feature comes with a price - Gigglebytes needs contributions from ITWeb readers.
Some cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go.
Oscar Wilde
Odd behaviour at the office, strange names, weird end-user behaviour, bizarre IT occurrences, peculiar rumours, outlandish items spotted on the Internet, eccentric IT managers and disturbed IT drama queens are all fodder for Gigglebytes` weekly editions.
We promise contributors` names will be kept strictly confidential, or else used at every opportunity, depending on how the whim takes us.
So, to take advantage of this chance to use your 15 minutes of fame, e-mail amusing snippets to glenda@itweb.co.za.
Meanwhile, let the fun begin!
| Smile a while at this cool site
Check out Julie`s Geeks site (http://www.happychaos.com/geeks/) which features some really great computer-related cartoons. In particular, check out the cartoon entitled "Technology at its best". While the site hasn`t been updated recently, it`s still quite a hoot.
| Out, damned devil!
Check out The Register at http://www.theregister.co.uk/000310-000003.html for a story entitled: "US preacher finds demon-possessed PCs". According to the wacky article, the minister estimates that one in 10 computers in America now host some type of evil spirit (and we`re not talking Windows here!). No matter how off-the-wall this story sounds, it does kinda explain computers` often-erratic behaviour!
And while you`re at The Register, why not check out www.theregister.co.uk/000525-000004.html where ITWeb gets a mention in the story entitled: "South African man shoots PC". The article was inspired by a recent ITWeb story: "Man shoots PC" (http://www.itweb.co.za/sections/computing/2000/0005231004.asp).
This ITWeb story seems to have been taken far too seriously by some of our conservative readers, and Gigglebytes would like to take this opportunity to say "lighten up". The story was meant to provide a spot of absurd humour in an industry that takes itself far too seriously, and as a reminder that when your PC is annoying you to distraction, it is best to step back and laugh at the situation rather than kill the machine!
| Don`t take gender at face value
If you`re chatting on the Internet, there`s a good chance that boys will be girls, reports Reuters.
A study of over 400 US and Australian participants in role-playing games and other interactive online features found 40% had opted for cyber sex-changes - feigning an opposite sex persona at some point.
Role-playing games with fictional characters yielded the most gender bending, which the study deemed experimental and temporary.
Of the 60% surveyed who said they had no intention of switching gender, many said it would be dishonest or manipulative. Most just said they had no interest.
Don`t say you haven`t been warned! Nothing is ever quite what it seems on the Internet.

| Thought for the week
If lawyers are disbarred and clergymen are defrocked, doesn`t it follow that electricians can be delighted, musicians denoted, cowboys deranged, models deposed, tree surgeons debarked and dry cleaners depressed?
