US faces 'first Snapchat election'

The US presidential election this year will be the "first Snapchat election," as candidates take to the platform to rally young voters.

In the meantime, Republican and Democrat candidates alike are using Snapchat to reach out to voters as they vie for their respective party nominations.

While Donald Trump, Ted Cruz and Hillary Clinton all post infrequently, Bernie Sanders appears to be in the lead in terms of follower count.

Google Images displays racist 'unprofessional hairstyles' results

A US MBA student discovered this week that Google Image searches for "unprofessional hairstyles for work" overwhelmingly yield pictures of black women with natural hair.

Contrastingly, users searching for "professional hairstyles for work" will be presented with a barrage of white women, some elaborately-coiffed, and some with loose hair hanging in or obscuring their faces.

The discovery has stirred discussion about how unchecked search algorithms can pronouncedly perpetuate harmful racial stereotypes.

MIT 3D-prints liquid robots

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab have engineered a "printable hydraulics" method for printing complex shapes containing both solids and liquids.

To exemplify they work, the team has created a small robot that moves by means of pumped fluids.

The development promises to add extensive range to the mechanisms that can be 3D-printed in the future.

Computer 3D-prints a Rembrandt

A team of technologists, including some working with Microsoft, have produced a 3D-printed painting in the style of 17th-Century Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn.

To create the work, a computer analysed existing works by the Baroque artists to design a new painting in his style.

The new painting was then 3D-printed to have the same texture as an oil painting.

Google offers 3D VR painting

Tilt Brush, a new app from Google, allows users to paint in three-dimensional space.

The app is designed for virtual reality (VR) devices, and will let users "paint" three dimensional shapes into thin air, by waving their hands.

The VR medium also allows users to paint with "otherwise-impossible" materials, such as fire or snowflakes.
