Aardvark hits the ground running with Google technology

Aardvark, the African search engine backed by Intekom, has relaunched its offering atop technology provided by US-based search engine, Google.

The Aardvark search engine was announced yesterday, along with a new-look content-driven Web site.

Ashiek Manie, Intekom`s marketing and sales executive, says the decision not to renew the Aardvark contract with Infoseek was driven by Google`s ability to track Web sites quickly and accurately.

"Google is recognised worldwide for its superior search facilities and it was for this reason that we opted for this technology, not .

only to maintain Aardvark`s number one position, but to continue to offer our clients best-of-breed products," says Manie.

"One of the most frustrating issues facing local Internet users is the inability of search engines to provide accurate, fast results when one searches for South African specific queries. Inevitably search engines will give hundreds, if not thousands of search results and it is then up to the user to sift through these to find those that are relevant to SA.

Aardvark provides a database of sites from SA and other African countries, giving users the option to search sites from the continent by "all African domains" with Africansearch, or by category using Directorysearch. An international search facility is also included.

Google is the power behind Yahoo, and has been consistently ranked as the world`s top search technology for three consecutive years by independent survey organisation NPD NewMedia Services.

The new-look Aardvark also features Prodigy Instant Messenger powered by Odigo, a real-time communication system with voice chat capabilities.

Other features include the Top 10 most popular search requests, and regularly updated news from WOZA.
