Maxxor is one of the pioneers in software development in South Africa. This year marks this prolific company's 10th year of existence in the industry.
Founded in 2004 by Mustapha Baboo, Raj Moodaley and Shana Kay, the company came into being during a time when the IT industry in South Africa was very competitive and relatively new.
Since its inception, Maxxor has received numerous awards to recognise its work in the industry. Some of these include winning the SAB Kickstart entrepreneurial development competition, a nomination as one of the Top Emerging Empowerment Companies in the Software sector by Impumelelo as well as a nomination for the Department of Science and Technologies' TT100 (Technology Top 100) awards in 2009.
Maxxor soon saw the massive potential in adding a mobile gaming division to the company and Adrian Frielinghaus from Blue Leaf Games joined in 2010. This new-founded partnership resulted in the development of Moonbase, a game specifically designed for Mxit (a hugely popular free instant messaging application). After many years of success, Moonbase was mothballed in 2013 to allow for Maxxor to move on to other ventures, but the game may come to life again in the near future.
One of Maxxor's biggest achievements thus far has been its inclusion in Microsoft's Equity Equivalence Programme and becoming a Microsoft Certified Partner in 2011. Microsoft uses this programme and initiative to support the development of scarce technological skills by providing financial support and sharing valuable industry knowledge.
All of Maxxor's decade-long experience has now combined to forge a new path in the development of their flagship mobile sales app, Onsight. Maxxor still creates great custom software for its clients but now also provides high end mobile sales solutions.
Seeing as games and technology are such an integral part of the Maxxor environment, it was only fitting that the celebration of the company's decade in existence takes place in a gaming lounge. All the employees had a fun day off to play every game imaginable on various consoles and PCs. It was a great opportunity for laughter, interaction and catching up with fellow employees.
Speaking of employees, it seems that everyone at Maxxor enjoys their work thoroughly. When asked what makes Maxxor such a special place to work, many reply that the fun work environment balanced with good work ethic, drive and the continual development of new skills makes every day a good day to come to work. Colin Bob, a Maxxor employee for six years, says: "Maxxor employees quickly develop a family-like bond with each other. The people are open-minded, always willing to help each other, devoted to their work and display diligence at all times." Another long-standing Maxxorian, Farzaana Davids Sampson, is just as passionate about Maxxor: "The environment at Maxxor is fast-paced, challenging and flexible. But the best part about working here has got to be the people."
The first 10 years of Maxxor's existence has proven to be exciting and involved groundbreaking work in the IT industry. The Onsight mobile sales app is growing steadily in South Africa as well as countries such as Australia, India, the UK and Singapore. Projects for large local companies such as Media24, IAPB, Fuel Online and more prove that the next 10 years to come will take Maxxor to new heights and further entrench the company as a leader in the software development industry.
