Schools in the Northern Cape town of Sutherland will benefit from two mobile science laboratories that will be donated by the Department of Science and Technology (DST).
This is according to DST minister Naledi Pandor, who said the department plans to ensure schools in the area receive two mobile science labs to assist in the teaching of science.
She noted schools in Sutherland are poorly equipped to adequately teach science.
Pandor made the comments during the department's science exhibition in Sutherland. The department hosted the exhibition to expose learners to the different careers in the field of science and highlight one of the DST's flagship projects, the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT).
SALT is the largest optical telescope in the southern African region, using mirrors to look into the universe.
Scientists and researchers from all over the world are coming to Sutherland to use SALT, said Pandor.
"The community should be proud that such a significant project is in their town."
The minister also urged parents to make sure their children stay in school and study maths and science.
Pandor added she would like to see the children of Sutherland work at SALT as scientists or managing the facility in the future.
"SA needs the younger generation to become successful in order to build the country," she stated.
The department did not indicate when the science labs will be handed over.
