HMD Global, the Finnish company that owns the rights to use Nokia's brand on mobile phones, has launched three new smartphones in South Africa: the Nokia 8 Sirocco, Nokia 7 Plus and Nokia 6.
The Nokia brand was brought back to life last year with reimaged retro feature phones and smartphones with Android One, which means the devices will run Google software the way the Internet giant intended it to work, without any added bloatware.
After just over a year of operations, HMD Global now sells Nokia phones in 170 markets, and is the number one brand in the feature phone space.
The Nokia 8 Sirocco, Nokia 7 Plus and Nokia 6 were all announced at Mobile World Congress, in Barcelona, in February, alongside the slightly curved 'banana' 8810 phone and Nokia 1.
The 5.5-inch Nokia 8 Sirocco is the company's flagship and features a wide angle 13MP dual-sight set-up with Zeiss optics and 2x optical zoom. There is an edge-to-edge display with an OLED 2K screen.
It will go on sale in the beginning of May. It will only be available in black and contract prices will start at R499 per month from various operators.
The 6-inch Nokia 7 Plus has a dual-sight camera, with a 12MP wide-angle lens and a secondary 2x optical zoom 13MP lens. The company says the device's 3 800mAh battery can last up to two days.
It is on sale from today, available in black or copper, and contract prices start at R329 per month.
The 2018 edition of the Nokia 6 is a new version of the Nokia 6, which first went on sale last year. The new Nokia 6 is said to be over 60% faster than its predecessor, and has a dual-camera set-up and a USB C fast charging port.
It will be available in black and copper, from 23 April. No contract prices have been provided as yet.
Nokia says the operators have not yet set a prepaid price for the devices, but when launched in Barcelona in February, the European prices were EUR279 (R4 000) for the upgraded Nokia 6, EUR749 (R10 700) for the Nokia 8 Sirocco, and EUR399 (R5 700) for the Nokia 7 Plus.
