Apple is expected to unveil its next smartphone at an event on 10 September, according to technology blog AllThingsD.

The blog cites unnamed sources as the leak behind the launch date, but an Apple representative refused to comment on the timing of any upcoming events.

Rumours surrounding the company's next smartphone, supposedly to be called the iPhone 5S, have been doing the rounds for months.

A report in the Korea Times last month suggested the phone could be long-term evolution-advanced (LTE-A)-enabled, as Apple has allegedly approached SK Telecom to incorporate its LTE-A technology into the 5S. LTE-A technology will enable the iPhone 5S to download data twice as fast as its predecessor, at a speed of 150Mbps.

Leaked images of the upcoming smartphone also made their way onto the Web in June, suggesting Apple hasn't ventured from its design recipe for the iPhone 5.

Dissections of the images suggested the addition of a dual flash, with a vertical pill-shaped window for the LED flash as opposed to a round window. Another finding indicated the device is not exactly brand new as a code on the bottom of the device's main chip shows the number "1243", suggesting the chip was made in the 43rd week of 2012.

The US computing giant is allegedly considering larger screens for its future iPhones to compete with main rival Samsung, but it seems unlikely the iPhone 5S will feature a larger screen.

Sources with knowledge of Apple's plans have been quoted as saying the company is looking at introducing two bigger iPhones in 2014 - one with a 4.7-inch screen and one with a 5.7-inch screen.

Meanwhile, rumours of the launch of a budget iPhone linger, and it is believed to be set for release around the same time as the 5S.

Apple has not confirmed it will launch a low-cost iPhone. However, a number of tech analysts have said the introduction of a low-cost iPhone is inevitable, considering Apple is looking to diversify its customer base and take revenue from the lower end of the market too.
