Honor intros dual flagship strategy

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Honor plans to introduce foldable smartphones in Europe as well as international markets, as part of its dual flagship strategy.

This, as the former Huawei sub-brand tries to intensify its comeback in the smartphone market.

The company made its dual flagship strategy announcement at IFA 2022 in Berlin, saying it will bring its upcoming foldable flagship smartphones and all-round flagship smartphones to Europe and other regions around the world.

“Since our inception, Honor has always aspired to make great contributions to the industry to enable a better future for all. To achieve that goal, we’ve stayed laser-focused on our commitment to innovation,” says George Zhao, CEO of the Honor Device business.

“With the introduction of our dual flagship strategy, MagicOS 7.0, fitness and health solution, we look forward to providing compelling options to European and international consumers who are seeking the best foldable smartphones and the most premium user experiences on the market.”

Global smartphone brand Honor’s announcement comes as the foldable smartphone race hots up.

Last month, its former parent company Huawei unveiled a slew of flagship devices for the South African market, including theMate Xs 2 foldable smartphone.

Chinese rival Xiaomi has also released its Mix Fold 2 device.

Similarly, South Korean electronics giant Samsung announced the availability of its latest foldable smartphones – the Galaxy Z Flip4 and Galaxy Z Fold4 devices.

For Honor, reports indicated the company introduced its first foldable smartphone, the Magic V, earlier this year in China, with no further details of availability in markets outside China.

At IFA, Honor also previewed MagicOS 7.0, its upcoming cross-platform, cross-device operating system (OS) based on Android as well as PC and IOT operating systems.

According to Honor, the OS embraces open standards to facilitate seamless collaboration among smartphones, tablets, PC and other IOT products.

Alongside new user interface changes, the company says MagicOS 7.0 will let users control an Honor laptop, smartphone and tablet using a single keyboard and mouse.

“Through the feature, users can drag files across devices seamlessly, as well as type text into the smartphone or tablet with their laptop keyboard. MagicOS 7.0 will be officially announced in Q4 2022.”

In addition, the smartphone brand also unveiled its Honor 70, which is available across global markets, including South Africa.

As the latest addition to its high-end N Series smartphone line up, Honor notes that the smartphone is designed for vlogging enthusiasts.

With dual video streaming, Honor 70 can record two videos simultaneously, with one featuring a single subject and the other capturing the full group, it states.

It also features a dual main camera that comprises a 54MP IMX800 super sensing main camera with a 1/1.49-inch IMX800 Sensor and a 50MP ultra-wide and macro camera. The smartphone is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G plus 5G.

The Honor 70 5G + (Redcore 1 GB) is available on sale in South Africa in two main colours – crystal silver and midnight black.

Both versions come with Google Mobile Services, states Honor.

Amid the sanctions it faced in the US, Huawei decided to sell its Honor smartphone sub-brand in November 2020 to Shenzhen Zhixin New Information Technology, in an effort to save it.

At the time, Huawei said the sale will help Honor's channel sellers and suppliers make it through this difficult time.

Under new ownership, Honor’s devices are equipped with Google Mobile Services, which are the Google apps that often come pre-installed on Android devices.
