A recent episode of M-Net programme Carte Blanche highlighted the security problems associated with the growing technology of wireless networks. However, although wireless security certainly does require attention, it is really just a symptom of the greater problem - overall security.
So says Maeson Maherry, General Manager of NamITrust, the specialist enterprise security solutions provider within NamITech.
"There is a general lack of awareness around securing company information and technology assets," says Maherry. "The bigger picture involves general security issues, of which wireless network security is merely a fraction. However, the programme was indicative of the problematic lack of network security and management.
"Fixing the complete security of networks would go a long way towards addressing the problems experienced with wireless networks. Using solutions such as strong authentication of users, digital signatures and Intrusion Detection Systems would diminish security risks quite significantly," continues Maherry.
These solutions are available and have been for years. The real issue is how to bridge the language gap between business and technology, thereby getting businesses to realise that lack of network security puts them at commercial risk.
"Security has been seen as an afterthought since business began relying on technology to operate. And therein lies the root of the problem. To adequately secure company information assets, the chosen solutions need to be architectured, implemented and maintained by security professionals ensuring total security and, importantly these days, legal compliance."
Maeson concludes that the problems highlighted by Carte Blanche do not only apply to new technology, and external security threats are minor compared to the havoc that could be caused by a disgruntled internal employee with access to the network. Having said that, programmes of this nature do raise awareness of security issues and so are welcomed by the industry.
