Why Linux and why the edge?

Johannesburg, 01 Oct 2002

With the launch of the LX50 server, Sun delivered on one of the original key concepts of the Linux community - namely, offering a hardware and software stack from a single vendor that can provide consistent support for the whole system.

The LX50 has become the right solution at the right time. This server provides a cost-effective Linux solution that not only fulfils edge computing needs, but also enables the use of high performance technical computing applications that include Grid, entertainment, life sciences, research and energy.

It is in fact the first general-purpose 32-bit x86 server to feature enterprise-ready Linux, based on the standard 2.4 Linux kernel.

Importantly, the LX50 builds on Sun's solid standing in the Linux community, as one of the major contributors of code to the open source movement (OpenOffice.org, NetBeans.org, JXTA, GridEngine).

Moreover, Sun LX50 server hits the mark with customer enterprise applications, such as investment banking, retail, government and healthcare markets.

Sun is, therefore, delivering the economics and simplicity asked for by customers. Lowering TCO (total cost of ownership) has now, with the help of the LX50, become a reality for datacentre customers.

And since many customers are also interested in 64-bit computing, the LX50 can also be bundled with the Solaris 9 Operating Environment (OE), which can be used by itself or act as a transition path to 64-bit computing.

We'd also like to call the LX50 'value engineered'. Priced at only $2 975, the server includes low cost, scalable hardware, and an integrated stack of open source and Sun ONE (Open Net Environment) software.

So, if the above doesn't make you think twice about how you outfit the edge of your network, maybe this will. Sun takes a full support approach to all its offerings, and the LX50 is no different. We are the single source for hardware and software support and professional services that most vendors' entry systems lack.

Consider this, if you buy a box with Red Hat, expect that your support question will be routed across the globe until the right vendor support centre claims your call. And make sure to read the fine print, your first call could potentially cost you thousands of rands.

The Sun LX50, loaded with integratable software, is a powerful alternative to the piece-meal software/hardware approach of other vendors.

As the sole provider of both the hardware and the Linux distribution, Sun swiftly and cleanly eliminates the hassles of a multi-vendor, multi-headache approach found in entry-level systems.
