A survey has found that the vast majority of women Internet users in SA go online to gather information on news, business and health.
M-Web reports that a new survey of its users has found that 73% of female visitors to mweb.co.za are looking for news and research. Women make up 35% of M-Web subscribers.
Russel Yeo, GM of M-Web Studios, says the survey indicates that women go online with specific goals in mind. "This mirrors behaviour in the real world where women tend to be more goal-oriented," says Yeo. "Today`s woman is juggling numerous roles which drives her to look for quick and easy ways to access the information she needs."
Yeo`s views are supported by online psychologist Michael Simpson, who says: "Women have very clear reasons for using the Internet and when looking for information or posting queries, they use detailed, clear language designed to extract the most useful information."
M-Web`s survey showed that women most often use the Internet to gather information (72.78%); about 13% of visits are for banking and finance; and 13% of visits are for shopping. Jobs, travel, motoring information and weather are also popular.
Women are also using the Internet, specifically e-mail, chat and vote services, to communicate their feelings and views on issues. Earlier this year, M-Web and Carte Blanche conducted an online poll that found 60.25% of South African women have been physically or verbally abused. Yeo says the anonymous nature of the online environment empowers South African women to let their voices be heard.
"M-Web is dedicated to delivering services and tools women need to make their lives easier and more fulfilling," says Yeo.
