LG is expected to release the LG G6 next month in Barcelona at Mobile World Congress (MWC). Various leaked reports and LG press releases have hinted at what the smartphone could look like.

Ubergizmo reported that invites for an LG press conference taking place at MWC next month have been sent out. The company launches its latest flagship device at the event every year and the invite suggests a new premium smartphone will be unveiled this year.

LG has also dropped multiple hints about the G6 to the media.

A recent report by Korea Herald shows how copper pipes will be integrated into the phone to prevent overheating, on the back of rival Samsung's explosive Galaxy Note 7 disaster last year.

Earlier this month, a division of LG, LG Display, issued a press release unveiling the world's first QHD+ LCD display with an 18:9 aspect ratio designed for smartphones. The division said this display will be used in an upcoming LG smartphone.

The release also detailed how the new display will feature better touch response, improved outdoor visibility and will be more energy-efficient.

In a video released by LG, the company asked people what features their ideal smartphone would have and teased that these 'wishes' may come true. The features included a bigger screen (but not a bigger phone), waterproofing, non-slip surface, and one-hand usability.

Step away

In the first week of this year, The Wall Street Journal ran a report confirming the LG G6 will not be modular, unlike last year's G5.

The G5 launched with a series of add-ons, called 'Friends', which were either modular attachments or controlled by the phone. The 'Friends' included a 360-degree camera, a virtual reality viewer, speaker, camera and power bank. They were all sold separately and ranged in price from R999 to R3 999.

One of the most-asked questions at the time of the LG G5 launch was if the extras would work with future models, as customers did not want to invest in costly extras that would be defunct in a year. LG gave its word they would work with future phones.

This is not the case anymore. However, going back on its word may have been for the best (albeit not for the customers who bought the extras), as a move away from the design allows a focus on features like waterproofing that are already prevalent in other top-selling brands, such as Samsung and Apple.

ITWeb reviewed the device last year and found the battery life decreased with continued use, and that add-ons did not significantly improve the experience.

The LG G5 is rumoured to be discontinued soon as one of the company's suppliers filed for bankruptcy.
