Wireless Business Solutions (WBS) has introduced iBurst, a broadband wireless modem.
The privately-owned company, better known for its provision of the National Lottery network, says the product is targeted at all users - from home to corporate.
It is in the trial stage of offering the product together with broadband Internet service in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. Its Internet service provider is UUNet.
According to the company, the iBurst technology can reach speeds of up to 1Mbps.
The service is compatible with several devices including notebooks, personal digital assistants and desktops, which the company says require no upgrades in order to get the best results.
The broadband modem comes in two types: for notebooks and desktop computers.
The modem provides up to 1Mbps wide area access and is an always-on connection compatible with almost all existing desktops and notebooks, and features encryption.
The company has two packages on offer: the first has an introductory price of R454 per month on a two-year contract, but will go up to R679 for the notebook version and R699 for the desktop version. There is no activation fee, says WBS.
The laptop modem retails at R2 100, while the desktop version costs R2 800.
