Vodacom`s non-South African operations, which account for 4.9 million customers, or 19.3% of the total customer base, saw an increase in the total customer base of 11.6% during the quarter.
"Satisfactory customer growth was achieved in all Vodacom`s other non-South African operations, most notably Mozambique with a 19.2% increase in its customer base," said 50% shareholder Telkom in a JSE trading update.
Vodacom Tanzania increased its customer base by 9.5%, to almost 2.3 million, from just over two million. Average revenue per user (ARPU) was down to R51, from R67, a 23.9% drop, while churn moved up 4.4% from 28.5% to 32.9%.
In the Democratic Republic of Congo, Vodacom had 12.5% more customers at 1.7 million subscribers, while ARPU dropped to R81 from R86, a 5.8% decline. Churn picked up 1.4% and moved to 29.5% from 28.1%.
In Lesotho, the operator gained 15 000 subscribers to reach 221 000, a 7.3% increase. ARPU dropped 3.8% to reach R75 a month from R78. Churn decreased 2.7% to 19.6% from 22.3%.
Mozambique - the star of the stable - increased its subscriber base by 19.2% to reach 584 000 customers from 490 000. However, ARPU was down 27.8% to R26 from R36. Churn was down 3.3 percentage points to 28.9% from 32.2%.
