Vodacom announced today that it will begin allocating cellphone numbers beginning with "072" to new customers. The "082" prefix was previously the only number range to represent Vodacom cellphone numbers.
"After originally forecasting 250 000 subscribers in the first 10 years of operations, Vodacom now has some 3,5 million customers after just six years of operations. Because the original number ranges allocated are almost fully utilised, Vodacom is delighted to have access to a brand new number range that will allow much needed space to expand," said Joan Joffe, Group Executive - Corporate Affairs of Vodacom.
Ms Joffe said that the exponential growth in connections had been accelerated by the launch of prepaid cellular in 1996. "More than 90% of all new Vodacom connections are prepaid and the 072 range will initially be used exclusively for our Vodago prepaid customers," she said.
Vodacom customers allocated cellphone numbers beginning with 072 will enjoy exactly the same benefits and access to services as 082 customers. Vodacom services dialled via an 082 number will also be available to 072 customers at the same charge.
"An 072 prefix in front of a cellphone number is just another way to experience the benefits offered by South Africa`s leading cellular network operator," concluded Ms Joffe.
