VMware and Nvidia are partnering to deliver an end-to-end enterprise platform for AI as well as a new architecture for data centre, cloud and edge that uses Nvidia's data processing units (DPUs) to support existing and next-generation applications.
“Data is the fuel of next generation services,” said Pat Gelsinger, CEO of VMware during VMworld 2020 this week. “But how do we harness all that data? How do we extract insights? The answer is artificial intelligence.”
According to him, businesses are hungry to tap the power of AI, for example, high throughput use cases for video analytics in financial services or real time streaming for fraud detection. For healthcare, AI is now vital to the race for a COVID-19 vaccine.
“But, as exciting as these next generation apps are, they're beyond the reach for mainstream organisations. In fact, enterprise AI adoption is stuck at just 10% to 15%. Today, we're changing all of that through our strategic partnership with Nvidia to unleash AI for every enterprise.”
The joint initiative is part of Project Monterey, also announced during VMworld. Through the partnership, the set of AI software available on the Nvidia NGC hub, will be integrated into VMware vSphere, VMware Cloud Foundation and VMware Tanzu.
This, added Gelsinger, will help accelerate AI adoption, enabling enterprises to extend existing infrastructure for AI, manage all applications with a single set of operations, and deploy AI-ready infrastructure where the data resides, across the data centre, cloud and edge.
As part of Project Monterey, the companies plan to deliver an architecture for the hybrid cloud based on SmartNIC technology, including Nvidia BlueField-2DPU.
