Keeping to its commitment to continue expanding its smartphone portfolio in the country, Chinese smartphone brand Vivo Mobile has now unveiled the Y1S, following a global launch in August.

The Y1S is available on postpaid contract at the price of R199 per month for 24 months, and only through the MTN network for now, according to Vivo.

In addition, Vivo’s Y11 smartphone, which entered the South African market at launch in December 2019, is now also available through the MTN network at R249 per month on a 24-month contract plan.

The Y11 is available for retail through all other points of sale in the country and on contract through Vodacom.

“We are very excited to have our product available in the MTN network,” says Hawa Hyath-Saloojee, Vivo Mobile SA marketing director. “We truly believe that being available through Mzansi’s best-loved network is a much-anticipated step towards being accessible to all South Africans.”

MTN SA GM for devices Christopher Hopkirk adds: “Offering Vivo products on our network is in line with our commitment to offer all South Africans the benefit of a modern connected life. There is no doubt that Vivo smartphones will complement our award-winning network which we have invested over R55 billion into in the past five years.”

The Chinese smartphone brand has slowly been making inroads in the local smartphone market, with plans to break into the top tier cellphone market within three years. Vivo has a global footprint of over 200 million users, and is present in 30 markets across the globe.

Including the Y1S, Vivo now counts seven devices carrying its name in the local market: the Y11, Y91C, Y12, Y30, as well as its 5G-ready X50 range that is made up of the X50 and X50 Pro.

Featuring a 6.22-inch halo full view display screen, the Y1S’s 4 020mAh battery power is supported by smart power management.

With 5MP front and 13MP rear camera, the device is powered by Android 10. It has 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal ROM. It can expand up to 256GB with an additional SD card.

The Y1S is available in black and blue.

Meanwhile, Vivo SA also reveals it has partnered with acclaimed local photographer Trevor Stuurman, to put to work the brand’s claim of “redefined photography” with the Vivo X50 Pro.

“Trevor was the immediate choice to showcase the ground-breaking features of the phone,” says Hyath-Saloojee. “Trevor is no stranger to taking his expression and creativity global. As a young South African creative, he not only inspires others to think big, he also provides masterful expertise when it comes to image making and capturing moments.”
