VERITAS Software Corporation has disclosed its Linux Strategy and Roadmap, demonstrating a commitment to support heterogeneous enterprise environments that include the Linux platform. VERITAS Volume Manager, VERITAS File System, VERITAS Cluster Server and VERITAS NetBackup server will be ported to Linux during 2000, as part of the Linux Roadmap. VERITAS Software also unveiled its open-source strategy.
"Linux is one of the important new platforms in the industry today," says Nick van Noordwyk, regional manager, Middle East and Africa at VERITAS Software. "By adopting Linux as a strategic new operating environment, we demonstrate our ability to offer our solutions across the major platforms."
IDC predicts that by 2003, Linux servers will account for approximately 24 percent of worldwide server appliance revenue, worth close to over R24 billion. Linux appliance servers are estimated to account for 14 percent of shipments or approximately 1.1 million units.
"By announcing its Linux roadmap and open source strategy, VERITAS Software is adding credibility to the Linux market," says IDC`s Vernon Turner, vice president of commercial systems. "The Linux market requires enterprise-tested storage management functionality, support for a high-end database environment and a broad level of coordinated cooperation amongst distributors, ISVs and the system integration communities, all of which VERITAS Software will be providing."
Linux solutions are found in a broad range of enterprise environments, including appliance-class systems, gateway and firewall servers, file and print servers, e-mail servers and Web servers for e-commerce environments. Linux is also emerging as a solution for application and database servers. For Linux to be successful in these enterprise-level deployments, the Linux platform requires powerful storage management applications that will allow it to scale to large configurations and offer the continuous data availability features demanded in these environments.
VERITAS Software Linux Solutions
Today VERITAS Software offers backup and restore clients for Linux via agents for its VERITAS NetBackup and VERITAS Backup Exec data protection solutions.
VERITAS NetBackup client software for Linux enables high-speed backup "over the wire" to VERITAS NetBackup media servers. The VERITAS NetBackup Linux client facilitates high performance data protection for Red Hat Linux, SuSE Linux and Caldera OpenLinux servers or workstations. This solution is currently shipping with Red Hat Linux 6.1 Deluxe.
VERITAS Backup Exec is the distributed data protection solution for multi-platform installations that require intuitive and reliable data protection with minimal administration, also currently supports Red Hat Linux, SuSE Linux, Caldera OpenLinux and Mandrake Linux. Additional support for TurboLinux is expected this year.
VERITAS Software Linux Roadmap
During 2000 VERITAS Software expects to port VERITAS Volume Manager, VERITAS File System, VERITAS Cluster Server and VERITAS NetBackup (as a server solution) to Linux.
VERITAS Volume Manager is an on-line storage management solution that provides centralised management of disks and disk arrays without the need to take storage offline for reconfiguration and maintenance, protection from disk and path failures and tools to optimise disk I/O performance.
VERITAS File System is a quick-recovery, journaling file system that provides the high performance and on-line manageability required by mission-critical applications
VERITAS Cluster Server is a comprehensive availability management solution - scalable from two to 32 nodes - that maximises the availability of data and applications through proactive management of planned and unplanned downtime.
VERITAS NetBackup is an enterprise data protection solution for heterogeneous and homogeneous environments (including Windows NT and all major UNIX versions).
"The partnership that has developed between VERITAS Software and Red Hat enables Red Hat customers to reap the benefits of VERITAS Software`s high availability storage management applications," says van Noordwyk.
VERITAS Software`s Relationship with Red Hat
VERITAS Software has formed a strategic partnership with Red Hat to accelerate the availability of enterprise-class VERITAS Software application storage management solutions on Red Hat Linux. Together, VERITAS Software and Red Hat are working to ensure that VERITAS Software solutions for Red Hat Linux will meet the needs of enterprise customers who demand the continuous availability of business-critical information. The two companies will also cooperate in the delivery of VERITAS Software`s storage management and high availability solutions for Linux. In addition to joint development activities, VERITAS Software and Red Hat plan to mutually explore marketing programs and sales and support strategies to promote and deliver the technology solutions that result from their alliance.
The VERITAS Software Open Source Strategy
As VERITAS Software releases products for Linux, its core products will continue to be in a binary format, just as they are today for any other platform. Any additional technology developed specifically for the Linux kernel will be open source.
