Veritas Software, provider of enterprise-class application storage management software, has announced new versions of its complete heterogeneous hierarchical storage management (HSM) technologies, Storage Migrator for UNIX, Storage Migrator Remote for Windows NT and UNIX and Storage Migrator for Windows NT. Veritas Software`s newly combined Storage Migrator family of products is designed for companies with data residing in heterogeneous environments requiring solid solutions to manage their business-critical applications. "The combination of shrinking backup windows and the explosion of data on a typical network server presents IT administrators with a difficult task of managing and protecting that data, while still making it available to users," says Nick van Noordwyk, business manager for Middle East and Africa at Veritas SA. "With the introduction of our new Storage Migrator family, the company continues to lead the industry in technologies that provide companies with solutions to address the growing need to reliably protect, access and manage business-critical application information."
As a result of the merger with Seagate Software NSMG, Veritas Software has branded HSM for UNIX as Storage Migrator for UNIX. Backup Exec Storage Migrator for Windows NT is now Storage Migrator for Windows NT. Storage Migrator for UNIX is also being revised concurrent with NetBackup for UNIX. Storage Migrator Remote for Windows NT is a new application in the Storage Migrator family.
Storage Migrator uses HSM functionality to proactively manage information, decreasing the total cost of ownership. For example, inactive data is migrated from on-line storage, such as disc drives, to near-line devices, such as optical drives, then finally to archival storage resources, such as tape devices. Thus, products in the Storage Migrator family provide seamless on-line access to infrequently used data while scaling to meet access requirements for terabytes of data on demand.
The result is a significant reduction in the costs associated with managing and protecting massive amounts of data throughout a UNIX and/or Windows NT environment, while expanding on-line storage and reducing the amount of data to be backed up. Storage Migrator is ideal for companies with increasing amounts of on-line data, such as banks, insurance companies, financial institutions, healthcare providers and multimedia departments with high-quality visual images, sound and graphics.
Storage Migrator for UNIX/ Storage Migrator Remote for UNIX Storage Migrator for UNIX has expanded UNIX-platform capability, as well as support for VxFS 3.3.2 file system. This version currently supports popular releases of 32-bit and 64-bit kernels of Solaris and HP-UX, as well as Auspex and IRIX. During a sweep of the file system, Storage Migrator for UNIX now displays a synopsis (number and size) of the selected and unselected (stopped) files. A group of files can now be cached using the "migstage" command with one request to NetBackup for UNIX. This eliminates the need for disk space to be twice the size of any file being restored. Additionally, there is a new Java-based administrator GUI in addition to the current Motif-based interface for Storage Migrator for UNIX.
Storage Migrator Remote for Windows NT
Storage Migrator Remote for Windows NT is an easy-to-use file and data management system for mixed Windows NT and UNIX environments that generate large amounts of data that must be retained for extended periods of time, with access to that data at any time. Ideal for data centers growing Windows NT that need to migrate file system data to backend UNIX and mainframe systems, Storage Migrator Remote for Windows NT migrates data from a Windows NT server to any file folder or FTP server, including UNIX or mainframe systems. At that point the data can be moved to optical or tape libraries using Storage Migrator for UNIX or any other HSM application.
Storage Migrator for Windows NT
Storage Migrator, a multi-tier hierarchical storage management (HSM) application delivers enterprise functionality to client-server environments. By bringing Storage Migrator for Windows NT together with Backup Exec and NetBackup for Windows NT, the company provides customers with an open Windows NT standard storage-management solution.
Veritas Software has partnered closely with Microsoft to bring an open Windows NT backup and storage management solution to all users of the Windows NT operating system. It has developed a single-tier version of Storage Migrator for Windows NT with Microsoft to provide storage migration capabilities in the Windows 2000 Server operating system.
