Enterprise storage management vendor VERITAS has added Linux support to its Foundation Suite of storage virtualisation software. The support for the Red Hat variant of Linux adds to its well-established support for Windows, HP-UX and Solaris.
"Red Hat Advanced Server products will enable companies to migrate their systems from costly, proprietary Unix servers, to a far more cost-effective Linux system, running on Intel-based hardware," says Jonathan de Magalh~aes, VERITAS product manager, Storage Solutions at MGX.
"Many enterprise customers are committing their core systems to Linux. They are applying the same high-availability disciplines to their systems as companies running traditional production operating systems, one aspect of which is seamless storage management."
Candidate clients include those running databases on Linux and porting applications from Solaris and HP-UX to Linux, adds De Magalh~aes.
VERITAS`s storage virtualisation platform uses online storage management and file system technology to optimise storage hardware usage and to simplify administration of multi-platform environments. This enables companies to manage more storage with fewer resources, and to improve return on investment through increased application availability and productivity.
The Linux support in Foundation Suite 1.1 of storage virtualisation software is significant because such products have not been available for the open source operating system before.
VERITAS`s FlashSnap tool to facilitate using point-in-time copy methods now also supports Red Hat Linux. It offers reliable, point-in-time copies of data that can be used for data analysis, reporting, testing and zero-downtime backup methods, all without affecting production applications.
VERITAS will add Linux support for its high-availability clustering software later this year. NetBackup software already supports Linux.
VERITAS Foundation Suite combines file system and volume management technologies to create a management platform for enterprise storage and storage area network environments. Well established in Unix environments, this hardware-independent solution offers performance tuning capabilities and management tools to ensure the continuous availability of databases, applications and other resources running on Linux servers.
"Our customers are looking for ways to leverage the cost/performance benefits of Linux in more of their IT infrastructure, and VERITAS Foundation Suite will help them do that," says Matthew Szulik, president and CEO, Red Hat.
