Popular messaging service WhatsApp has claimed the top spot as the number one app that users most want to know the terms and conditions of use.
This is according to data from digital marketing firm Reboot Online, which conducted a survey to establish which Internet apps people are most curious about the legal terms and policies for users.
For its survey, Reboot identified ‘terms of service’ and ‘privacy policy’ as the two main legal user agreements every online app has. It then inserted the terms into the database of online analytics tool Ahrefs, to establish the apps people are searching for to readthe key legal user agreements.
The findings show there are 29 640 global online searches per month, on average, for WhatsApp’s legal terms and policies for users.
The popular messaging app claims the number one spot among the top 10 social media apps that users are most curious about the legal terms and policies, based on Reboot’s survey.
The survey result is to be expected, given that in January, WhatsApp sparked a public outcry across the globe when it updated its privacy policy. The policy allows the Facebook-owned messaging app to share certain data with Facebook – an option that users previously had a chance to opt out of.
Reboot’s survey also maps out other apps that receive over 10 000 online searches a month from potential or existing users keen to understand their legal terms and policies.
It places Discord, a messaging app popular with video gamers, in second position, with an average 15 750 worldwide online searches a month from those keen to discover and understand the platform’s legal terms and policies for users.
Facebook-owned photo- and video-sharing social networking service Instagram comes in the third place. According to Reboot, there are an average 13 400 global online searches each month for the popular app’s legal terms and policies for users.
Facebook (9 600) and YouTube (9 300) are among the other online apps which receive more than 9 000 worldwide online searches every month from internet users wanting to check each of their respective legal terms and policies for users, consequently ranking fourth and fifth.
Microblogging and social networking service Twitter is ranked eighth, with an average 3 450 global online searches each month, shows Reboot’s data.
In 10th position is Amazon. The e-commerce juggernaut attains 1 500 global online searches a month from those consumers interested in their key legal terms and policies for users.
