US tops security threat list again

Security firm Sophos has published its Security Threat Report 2007, examining the threat landscape during the previous 12 months, and predicting malware and spam developments for 2007, reports tech2.

The report reveals that the US hosts more than one-third of the Web sites containing malicious code identified during 2006, as well as relays more spam than any other nation.

The US and China represent nearly two-thirds of such threats.

Storm Trojan worst outbreak since 2005

The "Storm Worm" Trojan is the worst malware outbreak since 2005, says Symantec. The malicious software sent out in millions of spam messages over the weekend has now infected about 300 000 computers, reports TechWorld.

The e-mails first started appearing on Wednesday, advertising attached news reports on topics like "230 dead as storm batters Europe," or "US secretary of sate Condoleeza Rice has kicked German chancellor".

The attachments come with names such as "Full Story.exe" or "Full Video.exe". Once launched, they install malicious software that waits to receive further instructions over the Internet.

Security companies align to support Vista

Security providers will deliver fully tested and compatible versions of their consumer and small-business security solutions by 30 January, when Windows Vista becomes generally available on new PCs and in retail stores around the world, says Microsoft.

In addition, many independent software vendors have pledged to deliver a range of applications and services designed to enable safer online experiences for families and home users in time for the consumer launch, reports XTVWorld.

Throughout the development of Windows Vista, Microsoft has worked closely with security partners to provide technical support resources, access to application testing and compatibility labs, and developer training and certification programmes.
