US switches to clean power

T Boone Pickens, oil veteran and chief executive of energy hedge fund BP Capital Management, says US dependence on foreign oil is a threat to the nation's future, reports Financial News.

He has launched a publicity drive for the Pickens Plan, which advocates building enough wind turbines to replace 20% of the electricity generated by gas, and to use gas for transport to allow the US to cut oil imports.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee last week introduced bipartisan legislation authorising $2 billion (EUR1.3 billion) in US contributions to a new multilateral clean technology fund.

Green reduces IT operational costs

New tenders for IT initiatives across Asia Pacific are increasingly incorporating "green" IT standards, says Citrix Systems product marketing manager, Kunaciilan Nallappan, reports The Star.

He notes the trend indicated that organisations are becoming cost conscious and looking towards green computing as a way to reduce their IT operational costs.

While IT investments should be viewed as enablers to business growth, they can also be a huge cost structure if not managed well.

Green technology high on IT agenda

In the wake of global warming and concerns over environmental degradation, companies are integrating green agenda into their business models. The concept of green IT is awakening India Inc to IT's responsibilities towards environment conservation, writes India Times.

More than 500 million computers became obsolete worldwide by the end of 2007, while energy consumption from data centres touched 123 kwh. "The concern is now to make IT infrastructure energy efficient,'' observes Suresh Menon, head, storage business at Dell India.

In a green data centre, mechanical, lighting, electrical and computer systems are designed for maximum energy efficiency and minimum environmental impact. Even the construction and operation of a green data centre involve advanced technologies and strategies.
