For organisations in every sector to harness their data to gain maximum benefit, they need to turn raw data into actionable insights to meet the business's needs. This starts with defining ownership and putting data back into the heart of the business.
So says Caroline Herron, enterprise data architect, digital & data solutions, Capitec Bank, who will be presenting on “Understanding the business value of a data-mesh architecture”, at the ITWeb Business Intelligence Summit, to be held from 7 to 9 March, at The Maslow Hotel in Sandton.
Traditionally, she says, data teams managed data either centrally or in controlled and highly governed environments, limiting the ability of the business to work with its data at speed.
“Ensuring the data has business context has also proved challenging, and has been hampered by long development lifecycles.”
This, says Herron, is why implementing a data mesh or data architectures is the next evolution in many organisations.
In essence, a data mesh is a decentralised data architecture that organises an organisation’s data by a particular business domain, such as sales, marketing or customer service.
This gives more ownership to the individuals that produce a specify dataset and enables them to set data governance policies that focus on documentation, quality, and access.
During her presentation, Herron will provide an overview of what data mesh architectures entail, in terms of both data at rest phase, and in real-time. She will also highlight how businesses can derive maximum benefit from their data assets.
