UniForum SA, in partnership with NetDay Association and Mindset Learn, handed over computer laboratories to five Potchefstroom schools today.

The North West Department of Education accepted the project this morning at Botoka Secondary School, Ikageng.

According to UniForm SA, the programme, called Co.Za Cares, targets schools in under-resourced communities where education, training and computer skills are lacking.

Co.Za Cares is a corporate social responsibility programme promoting the use of IT in education. The project is funded by UniForum SA, the co.za registry, and employs the services of NetDay Association to install computer equipment, software and networking in these schools.

UniForum SA, through the Co.Za Cares programme, is sponsoring the development of the Mindset IT materials for secondary schools. The educational resources cover science, english, maths and IT. Lessons are offered through video, print and interactive computer materials.

NetDay Association has modified the package of Mindset materials for an open source platform, and says this is supported by pre-prepared lesson plans for teachers and subject-specific resource material for learners.

The Co.Za project has to date sponsored R8 million towards a national school project which has been running since 2001. More than 80 schools in five provinces have benefited from the initiative. Within this period, UniForum SA has donated 1 685 computers to 86 schools nationally.
