Adaptec says its Ultra160 SCSI technology is the first to be ported to the Linux IA-64 kernel - the basis for the 64-bit version of the increasingly popular Linux open source operating system.

By working closely with Red Hat, a Linux provider, Adaptec brings the speed and reliability of the new SCSI technology to the Linux-user community.

This initiative to bring Ultra160 SCSI to the world of IA-64 Linux is in line with Adaptec`s vision to be the top storage I/O enabler for platforms based on Intel`s IA-64 microprocessor architecture.

Because these two industry leaders have worked together, users of IA-64 Linux distributions from any of the major Linux vendors are assured of compatibility with Adaptec`s Ultra160 SCSI

"The rapid growth of the e-business and ISP industries has led to a dramatic rise in the popularity of Linux," says Ray Castle, director of European OEM sales at Adaptec. "This has brought Adaptec and Red Hat`s Linux engineering teams together to bring top-of-the-range software and hardware solutions to our customers, allowing us to take the driving seat in the Linux and IA-64 revolutions."

Doug Ledford, manager of kernel development at Red Hat, says: "Adaptec Ultra160 SCSI and IA-64 Linux are two incredibly powerful technologies rightfully aimed at the challenges posed by very high-end computing.

"By supporting Adaptec Ultra160 natively, users worldwide get seamless integration of Adaptec`s industry-leading technology with the Linux operating system."
