Ride-hailing firm Uber SA has introduced Uber Cash, an e-wallet service that allows riders to create a dedicated account linked to both their Uber and Uber Eats accounts, to make payments readily available.

With a significant number of businesses opting for contactless operations across South Africa in response to the COVID-19 crisis, the new feature, which has been in existence in some parts of the globe for a while, aims to improve on contactless transactions while providing the user with more control over payment options and their budget.

Almost any payment method can be used to transfer funds into the wallet, including credit cards, debit cards, Venmo, an EFT, barter transaction or PayPal. In some part of the globe, unbanked users can add funds at retail points of sale.

While existing payment options will still be available, including cash, Uber SA says this new feature offers a seamless way to make and further control payments, allowing users to pre-pay for their upcoming trips with Uber Cash, limiting unnecessary physical contact.

“Uber Cash is another way to create a seamless experience for all our users. This new option introduces a method of payment that is easily controllable, convenient and reliable,” says Alon Lits, director of Uber in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Once the account has been loaded, all credit is non-expiry, meaning locals can use it whenever they see fit, limiting potential cash deficits should either the driver, courier or user not have enough or exact change, as, just like a debit transaction, the exact amount will be taken.

To use Uber Cash, users can follow these steps:

  • Open your Uber app.
  • Go to payments in your app menu to add funds to your Uber Cash balance.
  • Select the amount you want to top up and your preferred payment method.
  • Before requesting a ride or placing an order, change your payment method to Uber Cash.
  • Choose a destination/add items to the basket.
  • Request a ride/or place an order via Uber Eats.
