The Twitter Music app is rumoured to make song suggestions based on personalised signals.

Twitter is expected to launch its music app today, after the first rumours surfaced mid-March, following a report by CNET that the micro-blogging site has been working on the app with We Are Hunted.

Other sources have also been saying the music app will not necessarily launch today, but rather this weekend at the Coachella music festival.

Twitter acquired We Are Hunted last year, and while the music discovery service did not want to reveal what its plans with Twitter were, it did say on its Web site: "There's no question that Twitter and music go well together. Artists turn to Twitter first to connect with fans, and people share and discover new songs and albums every day. We can't wait to share what we've been working on at Twitter."

According to allthingsD.com, the app suggests artists and tracks to users, based on personalised signals, and is influenced by the accounts the user follows. Users will not be able to download the music, but rather listen to clips from inside the app.

Soundcloud, iTunes and Vevo will apparently act as third-party services when it comes to playback, reported engadget.com.

The music app is also rumoured to follow top-trending music and suggest songs based on what users have listened to previously.

Twitter has 1.2 billion accounts and 200 million active users. The TwitterMusic account currently has 2.4 million followers.

No details of a South African launch date have been revealed.
