Twitter usernames will no longer be included in the character count in tweets, a feature that forms part of the company's plans to revamp the platform, as outlined last May.
Other plans included giving users the ability to retweet themselves and not including media attachments in the character count.
The feature will roll out this week. Previously, if a person's username was tagged in a tweet, those characters would count towards the 140-character limit, leaving less space.
The company says the change will bring about simplified conversations on the platform.
Firstly, the person a user is replying to will appear above the tweet text rather than within the tweet text itself, so users have more characters to have conversations.
Secondly, there will be a button call "Replying to..." which when pressed lets users easily see and control who is part of their conversation.
Thirdly, the usernames in front of the tweets will not be seen, making it easier to read the conversation.
Twitter says the updates are based on feedback from users as well as research and experimentation.
"In our tests of this new experience, we found that people engage more with conversations on Twitter," the company says.
This update is rolling out now on twitter.com, as well as on Twitter for iOS and Android, and will appear when the app is updated.
