Dewing has been promoted into a number of different technology management positions within Netcare, and has regularly been given additional challenges and different technology professionals to lead.
"That's where one of my strengths lie. I'm not the ultimate expert, or the guy who can develop the best .Net code. It's my team and building up the people I work with to take us forward, and the more I empower them and give them the understanding of the business drivers, the more we are uplifted."
Reflecting on his career since being promoted to CIO, Dewing's says a lot of the goals that were set five years ago have been achieved. "Healthcare is a fantastic industry, with so much opportunity for digitisation and innovation. It's remarkable how much there is still to do," he adds.
He believes inequality in South Africa needs to be addressed.
"Netcare as an organisation is committed to transformation, and we need to look at the bigger socio-economic factors that are playing out, including the IT profession."
