As the Department of Transport (DOT) rolls out its “Easter Road Safety” campaign today, it will also introduce body-worn cameras (bodycams) to be used by traffic officers.
This was revealed by the transport department, which says body-worn cameras will be useful tools in dealing with the high levels of bribery incidents by providing a factual account of events.
Popularly used by police and other law enforcement organisations across the globe, a bodycam is a wearable audio, video, or photographic recording system.
In a statement, the DOT says minister Fikile Mbalula, joined by North West Department of Community Safety and Transport Management MEC Sello Lehari and Road Traffic Management Corporation CEO advocate Makhosini Msibi will demonstrate the use of the new law enforcement technology.
Mbalula will officially launch the 2021 Easter Road Safety campaign, which aims to promote responsible road use during this period and beyond, according to the statement.
“The Road Traffic Management Corporation has taken a giant leap towards reinventing law enforcement by introducing a lasting solution to many law enforcement problems in the form of a body-worn camera to be used by officers. This use of e-enforcement will not only bring about much-needed relief to the fraternity but will also enhance road safety for all road users, especially motorists.”
The minister will also hand over 31 vehicles to the North West to enhance law enforcement efforts in the province, notes the department’s statement.
