Toshiba`s new SRS TruSurround XT audio technology is a true breakthrough in virtual surround sound advancement, delivering an enhanced virtual surround sound listening experience when multi-channel audio input is played on a two-speaker output system.
Implemented in all new notebooks, Toshiba aims to bring the home theatre experience to mobile computing. The SRS TruSurround XT features three important components: SRS Dialog Clarity to pick out and clarify dialogue; SRS TruBass for enhanced listening on low-frequency audio; and SRS WOW to widen the perceived sound image.
"A lot of today`s audio sources are provided with multi-channel encoding and are, therefore, designed for playback on systems that feature five, six or even more midrange speakers plus sub-woofers," comments Andr'e Rossouw, Toshiba product manager at Rectron.
"However, this represents a real drawback to people who want to watch DVD movies and other multimedia and don`t have a multi-channel playback system."
TruSurround addresses this limitation by taking the multi-channel audio signal as input and producing two-channel audio output specially designed to stimulate the surround sound experience to the listener.
Looking at the technology`s components, SRS Dialog Clarity, for example, picks out the dialogue portion of an audio recording and then enhances the clarity and audibility, thus alleviating poorly mixed or inaudible audio quality.
SRS TruBass capitalises on a unique aspect of the human ear, the tendency to infer low-range audio data when presented with higher frequency harmonic signals. TruBass "produces" the presence of an underlying low-range signal even though it might not be present in the original audio.
Lastly, SRS WOW technology incorporates the TruBass and Dialog Clarity technologies while also providing a horizontal and vertical extension of the sound image created by the two-speaker system - providing a richer and "wider" listening experience.
