The Salvation Army UK Territory selects Mimecast SaaS to improve e-mail security

New e-mail management solution sees charity eliminate spam.

The Salvation Army UK Territory has announced that it has selected Mimecast, a holistic e-mail management company offering SaaS-based e-mail archiving, continuity and security to help eliminate the threat from spam and improve e-mail security.

Implemented in January 2009, the Mimecast e-mail management system has already eliminated the threat from errant e-mails - identifying and removing around 40 000 spam e-mails every day.

Mimecast's security as a service provides more than 3 000 of the charity's users across the UK with a highly effective content filtering system. The solution was primarily implemented to combat the very high levels of spam e-mail (up to 90% of all incoming e-mails) that were being received by the charity.

Previously, IT staff was spending vast amounts of time each week just trying to identify e-mails that were relevant. The charity was looking for a way to reduce the time associated with managing e-mail and ensure that all communication was secure. There were also concerns that any filtering system might incorrectly identify legitimate e-mails as spam resulting in delays in receiving important or sensitive information.

The charity needed a service that provides staff with reliable and secure e-mail communication, enabling staff to focus on the core objectives of the organisation. Martyn Croft, CIO for The Salvation Army UK Territory with the Republic of Ireland, said: “By using Mimecast's unified e-mail, we can drastically reduce spam e-mail. In fact, our employees are so impressed with the service that they are surprised if they now receive even a single spam e-mail. They have now come to expect this as the norm.”

Mimecast's security as a service provides the charity with a level of e-mail denial of service prevention, application and operating system vulnerability protection. The charity benefits from multiple-tiers of anti-malware, including zero-day protection technologies, data leak prevention and multiple forms of encryption, all enshrined by a 100% e-mail malware protection.

Martyn Croft continues: “The benefits gained through this service were immediately apparent, and even the implementation was seamless. Because of the success of this project so far, we look forward to taking advantage of Mimecast's additional services, such as e-mail archiving and continuity that can retrieve over 10 years worth of e-mails within just a couple of seconds.” Croft concludes: “I can't imagine anyone not wanting this service once they see it in action.”

Peter Bauer, CEO of Mimecast, adds: “As with corporates, charities also require advanced and robust IT systems to manage areas such as their e-mail and security. And, with the number of threats via e-mail continuing to grow, organisations must be on high alert and well prepared to deal with these.

This project demonstrates how an effective security as a service model can help organisations such as The Salvation Army UK Territory avoid these threats and focus on their core objectives.”
