Texting gets a bit of PEP

South African retailer PEP has unveiled an instant messaging Java application, called PEPtxt, offering customers free text-based communication on Java-enabled cellphones.

The application costs 14c to download and allows each user to then add friends to be able to communicate - via texting - for free.

The retailer says the application will afford its customers a relevant and contemporary way to communicate, and will go far in further establishing PEP's stamp on the cellular market in the country.

PEP claims to be SA's biggest seller of cellphone handsets and airtime, selling well over three million cellphone handsets a year and over 100 million airtime vouchers, or 650 every minute. PEP sells around three million minutes of airtime every day through its store network, states the retailer.

PEP customers can SMS PEPtxt to 32727 for more information, or download the application from PEPtxt.mobi. Alternatively, the retailer will send SMS invites to its customer base, which can be used to obtain the application.
