Tellumat Group to exhibit at Africa Aerospace and Defence 2008

Tellumat, a leading independent South African defence, communications and contract manufacturing electronics group, is showcasing its broad range of defence-related offerings at the fifth Africa Aerospace and Defence Exhibition, held at Air Force Base Ysterplaat from 17 to 21 September.

It is Tellumat's fifth straight showing at the biennial event, a respected fixture on the global aviation, aerospace and defence calendar. Shaun Hendricks, Tellumat Group Chief Operating Officer, says apart from the group's defence, aerospace and airports portfolios, it will also showcase military applications for its wireless and telecoms solutions and manufacturing.

Tellumat is also interested in knowledge-sharing ties under the South-South collaboration, India-Brazil-South Africa partnership, the Non-Aligned Movement and the Group of 20, offering design, manufacture, supply and support of its different technologies, as well as a broad and deep industrial and technology base.

Defence Identification
Tellumat Defence's core identification product and system portfolio, including the tri-service secure National Identification System, has been sold to the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and export customers.

Tactical Data Links
Tellumat's significant capability in tactical communications has applications for UAVs, fixed and rotary wing aircraft and terrestrial applications.

Radar
The company has for many years maintained, supported and upgraded the South African Air Force's (SAAF) Umlindi long-range air defence radar systems, and recently won a deal to support and maintain the SAAF's airfield radar approach systems.

Logistic Support SAAF Support
Tellumat Defence's logistic support offering has strong engineering and technical backing within the Group. It supports SAAF aircraft components and radar systems, and can re-design and manufacture components becoming obsolete over a radar system's lifetime.

SA Navy System Support Centre
Tellumat Defence has been awarded two contracts from the SA Navy to support microwave and navigation systems - ashore and on the latest frigates and submarines.

SIA Solutions
SIA Solutions, a 60%-owned joint venture with Harambe Technologies, offers en-route navigations systems, turnkey air base and airport installations for navigation and landing systems, meteorological stations, ground and vehicle movement management systems, airport security and airport ground lighting. It also offers installation, project management, logistics support, system commissioning and maintenance services.

SIA Solutions has been awarded a tender for maintenance of the SAAF approach and navigation systems, and will supply Non-Directional Beacons to the Directorate of Civil Aviation in Botswana.

Telecoms and Wireless Solutions
Tellumat's telecoms and wireless solutions businesses focus on communication infrastructure and CPE solutions, such as high-redundancy pure IP business communications, unified communications, collaboration tools, microwave radio and wireless offerings. The latter include WiMax, an easily, cost-effectively and rapidly deployed means to provide static backhaul and mobile defence communication networks. Services include network planning and rollout as well as installation and operation of network management systems.

Tellumat has been named the preferred contractor to supply, implement and maintain the national WiMax network of Neotel, SA's second fixed-line network operator, and is supplying the SANDF with point-to-point digital microwave radio links for its national command and control network.

Laingsdale
Laingsdale is a leader in precision mechanical manufacture. With its origins in defence, it has for over 30 years focused on fuzes, safe-and-arm devices and kinetic energy projectiles. With a full in-house capability to design, develop and manufacture fuzes to international defence quality and safety standards, Laingsdale's range includes fuzes for artillery ammunition, mortars, low- and high velocity as well as self-destruct grenades. It has also been involved in naval countermeasure mine-clearing devices and moored mine cable cutters.

Technology Group
The Tellumat Technology Group provides system and product design services. Its engineering expertise covers systems engineering, project management, FPGA design, software design, hardware design, industrial design and mechanical design. Tellumat's design experience covers commercial electronics, telecommunications, data communications, wireless communications, defence electronics and defence systems.

UAV Flight Stabilisation Technology
TTG's flight stabilisation technology demonstrator project comprises a flight computer, a navigation component, a data logger and ground station software, for communicating with aircraft and displaying relevant information during flights. The need for simulating flight computer systems led to the unit's co-development of a hardware-in-the-loop test environment with Stellenbosch University.

Manufacturing
Tellumat Electronic Manufacturing has the capacity, skills and production flexibility to service all customers' outsourcing requirements, no matter the complexity - ranging from prototyping to managing turnkey mass-production on very large runs.

Tellumat made two acquisitions in 2007 (the electronics manufacturing plant of Denel Optronics, now Carl Zeiss Optronics, and of Rhomco) which boosted its capacity, footprint and production flexibility. The purpose-built 6000m^2 factory in Cape Town enables the company to quickly adapt its layout to customer needs and products. The unit provides development assistance, new product introduction, procurement and materials management, manufacturing and logistics services.

Tellumat Services
Hendricks says in almost ten years since inception, Tellumat has completed development of nine key product families and built full-turnkey project, engineering, development, manufacturing and servicing skills in numbers. "With leading expertise in the development, production, supply and support of world-class complementary technologies, Tellumat can offer all-round value to a range of customers and partners."

Supported by strong R&D and manufacturing resources, Tellumat Defence can provide a full turnkey solution, from product conceptualisation and design to manufacturing, implementation and support of cutting-edge technologies.
