Telkom yesterday experienced a hardware failure on its storage network, which resulted in users failing to send and receive e-mails.

According to a Telkomsa.net user who contacted ITWeb, the e-mail service has been down since Monday morning, thereby affecting about 65 000 mailboxes.

Pynee Chetty, senior specialist for media relations group communication at Telkom, confirmed the hardware failure to ITWeb this morning.

"Yesterday we experienced a hardware failure on the storage network. This only affected some Telkomsa.net users, preventing them from sending and receiving e-mails."

According to Chetty, the disruption was caused by some faulty drives which have since been replaced. He said the outage only affected about 10% of users.

However, he noted some customers still continue to experience an interruption to normal functioning as the new hardware undergoes synching with the rest of the storage network platform.

Telkom's technical team is working with the relevant vendor to ensure services are restored to normal as quickly as possible, he added.
