Telkom mast sabotaged

Johannesburg, 10 Nov 2006

One of Telkom's masts in KwaZulu-Natal has been destroyed.

The mast, one of 12 000 countrywide, was "wilfully damaged" a month ago, says group executive for corporate communications Lulu Letlape.

However, she adds this did not impact telecommunication functions, as the mast, in Nyamazane, was "obsolete and in the process of being removed".

A source informed ITWeb this week that the mast was down, and pictures provided by the source indicate the mast is lying on the ground.

A close-up indicates the tower is separated from the base. It is unclear at this stage what function the mast served.

Letlape adds Telkom has "a specific maintenance programme in which mechanical aspects of all these masts are inspected on a regular basis.

"This preventative maintenance procedure has proven to work excellently against possible corrosions," she adds in response to an enquiry whether corrosion could have caused the mast to fall down.
