Telkom Foundation aids rural school

Johannesburg, 08 Mar 2006

Minnie Maharaj, Telkom managing executive for wholesale services, has facilitated the donation of a computer centre worth R132 000 to her former school, Thornville Primary School, through the Telkom Foundation`s corporate social investment programme.

The school, located in a small rural community near Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal, will use computers for the first time in its 81 year history, says Telkom.

The centre will be equipped with 20 personal computers, Internet connectivity and a printer. The donation includes a server, free installation and an Internet monthly rebate for 12 months, says Maharaj.

"Telkom will further donate library books, school uniforms and a television set," she says.

"[The school] shares a cordial and supportive relationship with the community. This relationship will guarantee the community`s access to these facilities, thus enriching the lives of community members."

"The computers are in the process of being installed, and security has been installed at the centre by Telkom. Once the computers are fully connected, they will link up to a satellite dish to enable the students to access the Internet," says Ranesh Chowthee, Thornville school principal.

"The PC teacher training has not started. It will start as soon as the computers are fully operational," Chowthee concludes.
