Telkom board gets facelift

Dr Victor Lawrence, Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah and Reitumetse Huntley have joined Telkom's board of directors.

The three enter as Dr Marius Mostert, Dumisani Tabata and Yekani Tenza step down as directors of the board, following the expiry of their three-year terms of office, says Telkom.

Government elected all six representatives on the basis of its shareholding in the JSE-listed communications giant. Telkom's articles of association allow for government to elect five of the 11-member board.

The Telkom board has entered into an agreement with Mostert to retain his services. This is due to his involvement in Telkom's corporate finance activities and mobile strategy review, says the company.

Diverse input

A US resident, Lawrence has international experience in research and development in digital communications. He is also an entrepreneur, an active member of engineering professional organisations, an author and a teacher.

Spio-Garbrah, a Ghanian, brings telecommunications, government, diplomatic, business, banking and consulting expertise to Telkom's board. In September 2003, he was appointed chief executive of the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation. He is also a former minister of communications of the Republic of Ghana and one-time ambassador of Ghana to America and Mexico.

Huntley is a practicing attorney and senior partner of Mkhabela Huntley Adekeye. She has experience in commercial and corporate law, including telecommunications law. During her career as a lawyer, Huntley has been involved in projects involving the Department of Communications, Telkom, Denel, National Treasury, City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality, Transnet, SITA and the Department of Public Enterprises.

Huntley is a non-executive director of Blue Label Investment. This company also has a shareholding in iBurst.
