Takealot.com was last night named SA's favourite e-commerce Web site at the 2015 South African eCommerce Awards.
The 10th annual South African eCommerce Awards were hosted by uAfrica.com, in partnership with DPD Laser, PayFast, Nedbank and Shopify Plus. The awards have been designed to recognise and reward South African Web sites that have demonstrated excellence in their use of the Internet as a platform for e-commerce.
Takealot.com consolidated its market position in the South African e-commerce space following its merger with fellow online retail giant Kalahari.com this year.
The merger was initially announced in October last year, with the companies saying at the time "the move was driven by the fact that, without scale, SA e-tailers simply can't compete successfully against the local brick-and-mortar retailers and foreign companies such as Amazon and Alibaba".
Currently, the retail market for consumer goods in SA is worth about R800 billion, of which less than 2% is online.
The winner of South Africa's Favourite eCommerce Web site was determined by a round of public voting that yielded over 90 000 votes. Takealot.com was crowned SA's favourite e-commerce Web site by receiving the most public votes from the 90 000.
Kim Reid, Takealot co-CEO, accepted the award on behalf of the company.
"The eCommerce Awards have previously been exclusively an online event, however in 2013 and 2014 we announced the winners and runners up at the South African eCommerce Conference - incorporating it into the concept 'everything e-commerce'. However, as it is the 10th year, we want to focus purely on the awards by hosting an event dedicated to celebrating this achievement," said Andy Higgins, uAfrica.com MD.
From over 200 entrants the Top 50 was announced after a stringent evaluation process, says uAfrica.com. These 50 Web sites then underwent a second round of evaluation to determine the winners and runners up of the various categories.
