SYSTIMAX Solution's product and applications assurance warranty and the SYSTIMAX Labs

SYSTIMAX Structured Cabling Systems (SCS) offers a total assurance programme that is comprised of a 20-year extended product warranty and application assurance when registered by an authorised SYSTIMAX First Business Partner.

The SYSTIMAX warranty guarantees against product defects for 20 years after the system installation. This warranty applies to all the cable and apparatus that are part of a SYSTIMAX SCS installation - this is referred to as the component warranty.

System specifications, which detail the types of applications the design will support and to what limits, are published by SYSTIMAX Labs as a guideline to use in registering a SYSTIMAX SCS installation. The SYSTIMAX warranty also covers the end-user for EMC compliance when using a complete SYSTIMAX system with compliant electronics.

A numbered certificate is issued to each customer with a qualifying site - this is referred to as the Application Assurance. Together, these comprise the SYSTIMAX SCS 20-year extended product warranty and application assurance.

The difference between the SYSTIMAX Assurance and other 'guaranteed' systems on the market are clearly differentiated. Other cabling systems offer 'guarantees' of performance for a number of years. These are product performance guarantees usually based against the Category product performance programme (ie Category 5e, Category 6 or OM3). The SYSTIMAX product warranty covers this type of guarantee. SYSTIMAX gives the end-user the added comfort that the products are not just manufactured to a highest level of performance but the network applications running over the cabling solution have been tested and assured by SYSTIMAX Laboratories, a world-renowned leader in innovative technology. SYSTIMAX gives assurance of product performance and application support backed by thorough and in-depth testing, which means an end-user's network will work today and in the future.

The confidence behind these words can easily be illustrated by looking at SYSTIMAX Labs. SYSTIMAX Labs Scientists know and understand where future applications and network-related technology are headed. The Systems Engineering group collates the knowledge of future network trends and defines high-level systems (channel) performance requirements necessary to support the network in five years time. After the channel performance requirements have been specified, SYSTIMAX define specific component requirements (eg Cordage, outlets, cable and management) that optimally support the systems level specifications.

On the other hand, many vendors adopt to manufacture individual components with a focus on component performance. These vendors then search for other component vendors to complete their "channel solutions".

With the heritage of Bell and Avaya Laboratories, SYSTIMAX Labs continues to push the envelop with new innovations in product, process, electrical performance and testing. SYSTIMAX Solutions has a history of market firsts:

* First extended warranty and applications assurance programme in the industry.
* First cabling system certification programme in the industry.
* First 62.5 micron multimode fibre optic system.
* First end-to-end Category 5 cabling solution in 1991.
* First end-to-end Category 5e cabling solution in 1996.
* First end-to-end Category 6 cabling solution in 1997.
* First 10 Gigabit fibre cable solution - LazrSPEED in 1999.
* First end-to-end 10G UTP cabling solution in 2004.
* Over 20 billion feet of SYSTIMAX cable sold since 1990.
* Over 100 million outlets... and growing.

Some other interesting milestones in our history are:

1876: First Telephone 1876, First Twisted Pair Cable
1972: invented the MCVD fibre-manufacturing process that was later patented
1975: invented the Biconic connector - the first optical fibre connector
1976: demonstrated the first fibre optic transmission system for voice and data
1977: made fibre and cable for the first commercialised service
1980: made fibre, cable and apparatus for the first fibre optic network used at the Olympic Games (1980 Winter Games in Lake Placid, NY)
1981: invented 62.5mm multimode fibre (later accepted by other manufacturers at the standard MM design)
1983: began commercialised production of single-mode fibre
1983: AT&T PDS (SYSTIMAX) introduced.
1984: made fibre, cable and apparatus for the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles
1985: introduced the ST^a connector
1990: designed the 1061/2061 high performance UTP cables. Using a patented twist scheme, these cables were the boilerplate for the Category 5 standard
1991: EIA/TIA 568 Commercial Building Wiring Standard issued, based on the SYSTIMAX SCS

Standards support and participation

Central to SYSTIMAX development strategy is a commitment to industry standards, and for a simple and yet profoundly important reason: standards make it possible to have multi-vendor interoperability; allowing you to choose the equipment that best fits your needs. It is also a critical issue in selecting which vendors to choose - a company might claim to have leading technology, but without standards, there's no protection in your investment if the vendor chooses to change direction.

SYSTIMAX invests heavily in its own technologies and systems to meet the full range of customer needs, but there are limits to what any one company can do on its own. Our commitment to deliver complete solutions to our customers is paramount. SYSTIMAX works closely with other companies on the standards committees and industry foray, to create multivendor standards which enhance the communications market and enable users to benefit from advancing technologies.

SYSTIMAX, as an industry leader in the design and manufacture of state of the art UTP and fibre optic cables and apparatus which comprise the SYSTIMAX Structured Connectivity Solution. SYSTIMAX plays a vital role in standards relating to cabling infrastructures as well as associated communication standards. This activity ensures that SYSTIMAX customers can be confident that their cabling investment meets component and cabling system standards. Through its participation in a wide range of communication standards, SYSTIMAX can also ensure the applications and networks, which users want to operate over the cabling infrastructure, will be supported reliably, backed by the knowledge and support of SYSTIMAX Laboratories.

All of these standards organisations have an impact, in one way or another, on the products and services expected by a customer. In particular, regarding cabling, many of these standards, not necessarily known as cabling standards, will impact on the infrastructure. Today, a cabling solution is one of the most important and main transmission media over which network or communication system will operate. Therefore the membership, participation and technical input to the wide variety of standards is vital to fully comprehend the impact on the cabling infrastructure. We believe that SYSTIMAX's commitment to the complete communication standards community sets us apart from any other cabling company, which ensures customers investing in the SYSTIMAX solution are getting much more than standards compliant connectors and cables.
