Sybase reduces cost of ownership with new Replication Server for Linux

Johannesburg, 28 Aug 2002

Sybase SA, an enterprise infrastructure and integration software company, has announced the local availability of its latest version Replication Server 12.5 for Linux, an enterprise-class data replication technology. The new version includes support for Red Hat 7.2 and Linux Kernel 2.4, and allows high availability data management with reliable e-business security.

It improves performance by maximising resource utilisation through lowered disk contention, saving on total cost of ownership (TCO).

"Sybase is committed to its Linux platform customers and this product release is proof of our commitment," says Julie Tomlinson, sales and marketing manager at Sybase SA. "Sybase Replication Server has been the best product in its class because of its performance and ability to replicate data from many different vendors and sources. Now, Replication Server Linux users can enjoy the business-scale benefits of Kernel 2.4 support."

Replication Server 12.5 for Linux synchronises replicate copies of Adaptive Server Enterprise, Sybase's enterprise-class, relational database management system (RDBMS), used to support a warm standby architecture for high availability or to support distributed databases. Also, Replication Server provides advanced security for data communications through optional secure socket layer support.

"Replication Server can maintain a complete IT operation that is very close to real-time on a variety of hardware and RDBMS platforms," says Tomlinson. "In addition to support for AIX, NT, Solaris and Unix, it now also supports Linux Kernel 2.4, a popular and widely-used operating system, ensuring increased growth and flexibility."

The monitors and counters included in Replication Server 12.5 for Linux allow users to easily identify resource bottlenecks and architectural limitations, tune the product to provide maximum performance, and collect and analyse trend information. It also provides the comprehensive security needed to keep mission-critical data secure.

"Sybase's Replication Server for Linux is a critical part of our Iroquois Online (IOL) system, our proprietary electronic bulletin board used by customers for data and message transmittal," says Carl Moritz, database administrator for Iroquois Gas Transmission Systems. "We use Replication Server for business interruption continuity support, IOL site maintenance, and distributed reporting because it delivers tools that reliably distribute critical information between remote servers and systems. This ensures our website keeps running smoothly and continuously."
