Sun offers cross-platform support as Linux popularity soars

Johannesburg, 19 Feb 2002

In a move that underscores continued commitment to offer cross-platform support across its Open Net Environment (Sun ONE), Sun Microsystems is providing a new Linux version of iPlanet Application Server software.

Sun ONE is the vendor's vision of architecture, platform and expertise for developing and deploying services on demand.

"Linux's increasing popularity both internationally and in SA - particularly in the SME environment - has led to Sun expanding its support for this operating system," says Tertius Bezuidenhout, national SE manager at Sun Microsystems SA.

"The low cost operating system allows developers to deploy e-commerce solutions targeted at small to medium enterprises. We see Linux as a key player in the future, providing openness at affordable costs - an essential element in the local context," says Bezuidenhout.

Sun already supports popular platforms such as its own Solaris Operating Environment (OE), Windows, IBM AIX, HP-UX and OS/390. With this announcement it is expanding Linux support beyond existing versions of the iPlanet Web Server for content generation, iPlanet Message Queue for integration and Forte for Java tools to include the iPlanet Application Server for a complete development environment on Linux.

Sun will increase support of the open source operating system in an updated release of the iPlanet Application Server later this year. This will help to improve developer productivity and provide customers with more flexibility in deploying services on demand by not locking them into a single platform.

"Over the past year, we have seen increased demand among our customer base for Linux support. While most customers are continuing to deploy on the Solaris OE platform, they are developing on multiple platforms and Sun is committed to providing the robust, open foundation they need to build applications and services on demand," says Bezuidenhout.

He adds that coupled with the Forte for Java Enterprise Edition, Sun will soon offer open source developers a compelling and comprehensive end-to-end Linux development environment that enables developers to easily build, test and debug robust services on demand.

The iPlanet Application Server is a robust platform for the development, deployment, and management of application services. Business process automation services and connectivity to enterprise applications are also provided through an integration framework that enables developers to retrieve data and business logic out of SAP and other backend systems without having to leave the Java technology environment.

In addition, the iPlanet Web and Directory Servers are integrated with the product for added security and identity management for enterprise applications. Linux support for the iPlanet Application Server is scheduled for release in June.
